17 Walk-In Shower Ideas for a Beautiful Home Oasis

After a tiring day, nothing feels quite as relaxing as a long shower. That’s especially true if your walk-in shower is beautifully and thoughtfully designed. Indeed, now more than ever, homeowners want their bathrooms to feel like bona fide spas; spacious, stylish showers are a major part of that home wellness formula.

Looking to rethink your own bathroom? There are plenty of walk-in shower styles to choose from, whether it’s different materials, colors, finishes—or adding natural light. Here, we gathered some of our favorite selections from interior designers—plus some of their expert insights.

Vary Shapes

Using the same material throughout a shower—a trend that’s been dubbed “material drenching”— can create a cohesive, beautiful space. In this particular walk-in, interior designer Alicia Cheung mixed things up a bit. “It’s a fun combination of various tile formats,” she says. She opted to use a different tile for the floor, too, to juxtapose the blockier shapes on the walls.

Pair Matte Black Finishes

Matte black finishes are becoming more and more popular nowadays, both in kitchen sinks and bathroom showers. Here, interior designer Jessica Davis of Atelier Davis paired these accents with “beautiful marble with pink tones,” she says. “It’s echoed in the Fireclay tile [in the shower].”

Let the Light In

Bathrooms can often feel dark and claustrophobic, and natural light is the best way to combat this dilemma. Windows work especially well with glass walk-in showers, creating a light, breezy effect—so long as it doesn’t impede too much on your privacy.

In this particular bathroom, interior designer Peter Dunham opted to extend the floor tile into the shower. “It makes the room look bigger and makes the shower feel more integrated with the space,” he says.

Embrace Mosaic Tile

Interior Design by Young Huh

We love subway tile, and even a dramatic slab of stone, but mosaic tile can create a beautifully intricate, nuanced look. This is especially true in a walk-in shower, which offers plenty of real estate for a delicate, refined mosaic wall. In this project by interior designer Young Huh, mosaic tile provides a beautiful backdrop for the shower, with fine details resembling architecture.

Try a Bold Color

White bathrooms with white stone are everywhere, but a more vibrant palette can really make your walk-in shower stand out. This example by Landed Interiors blends a maroon subway tile with black-and-white patterns on the floor. The brass hardware ties the moody look together.

Bookmatch Your Stone

Lovers of natural stone will appreciate this walk-in shower, which features a dramatic black-and-white stone—the back wall is even perfectly bookmatched. “We had a lot of fun working with stone on this project,” says interior designer Eva Bradley. “The client truly appreciated the impact of a stunning slab and a thoughtfully designed tile layout.”

Add Dramatic Lighting

Interior Design by Nicholas Potts

Lighting can make a huge difference in any room—especially the bathroom, which can sometimes feel a bit dim. This walk-in shower is part of a converted dressing room, which interior designer Nicholas Potts deftly transformed into a primary bath.

Many of the original architectural details remain, with slight additions, like handcrafted wall tiles. The cherry on top, though, is the pink pendant by Josef Hoffman, which really takes the room—and shower—to the next level.

Vary Your Veining

Interior Design by Kallos Turin

Marble doesn’t always have to be plain white with gray veins. Add a bit of extra pizzazz to your walk-in shower with a marble that has blue, brown, or orange veining—like in this stately project by architecture and interior design firm Kallos Turin.

“We wanted to keep it feeling edgy and more masculine, so we chose a stone with a deep caramel and charcoal veining,” says co-founder Abigail Turin. “We try to use large pieces of stone and make sure every joint is aligned.”

Add a Curtain

Walk-in showers often have glass dividers, so there usually isn’t a curtain—but don’t let that stop you from adding one. In this particular project, interior designer David Ries added woven panels to the shower, which were inspired by traditional Japanese Noren curtains. “The panels were primarily added for privacy, but they also add texture and depth,” he says.

Make It a Wet Room

Interior Design by Blackberry Farm

For a truly spa-like space, look no further than a wet room. These dreamy spaces add a bathtub to the walk-in shower area, creating a private oasis where you can really soak up all the relaxation—and steam.

“If you have the space, be bold and forgo the walls completely!” says Christine Carney, design director of Blackberry Farm Design, who created the above project. Bonus points if, like Carney, you can also integrate natural wood and stone.

Create a Corner

Anyon Interior Design

When it comes to a walk-in shower, placement is everything. In this project by interior designer Lindsay Anyon Brier, the shower is situated in a corner and clad in white marble. Not only does this fit well with the room’s layout, but the shower also leads directly outside to a serene soaking tub.

Bring the Full Spa

Interior Design by Vanessa DeLeon

If you have the space, why not create a dual walk-in shower? Nothing feels more luxurious than a bathroom clad in stone and with ample space to relax, after all—this shower by interior designer Vanessa DeLeon is the perfect example.

Let the Outdoors In

Interior Design by Ten Plus Three

Biophilic design is here to say, and we’re loving the impact it’s had on just about every corner of the home, including the bathroom. In this space by interior design firm Ten Plus Three, the space looks out into lush greenery just beyond. A neutral color palette in the walk-in shower really lets these verdant accents shine.

Lean Into Natural Materials

Organic, natural materials can look beautiful in every corner of the home, but we especially love how they can elevate a bathroom. This walk-in dual shower is clad in a white stone with pink undertones, perfectly matching the wood floor and finishes beyond.

Pair Brass and White Stone

Christopher Churchill

Brass finishes and white stone are a classic look for a reason. This walk-in shower brings them together seamlessly, creating a spa-like feel. We especially love the flush mount.

Extend the Floor

If you’re lucky enough to live in a home with historic elements, then those architectural features can be preserved and celebrated in a walk-in shower. In this New York townhouse by BarlisWedlick, the beautiful stone floor extends across the whole space, including the shower itself.

Try Soft Metallics

Interior Design by White Arrow / Photography by Thomas Richter

Brass and other warmer metals seem to be everywhere these days, but we love how a cool-toned metallic, like nickel or chrome, can really soften a space. In this loft project by interior design firm White Arrow, these elegant metal details are the perfect framework for the white bathroom and walk-in shower.
