5 sun-drenched outdoor bathrooms to add to your moodboard

For a California couple with two grown boys, Hawaii had always served as an escape. “We visited the islands dozens of times when our kids were growing up, and loved the warmth of the people, the nurturing, healing air, and the peace and tranquility,” says the wife. “We reached a point where we felt we wanted to grow roots here.” There was nothing exceptional about the site they ultimately chose: The landscape was barren but for a grove of kiawe trees and the faint underpinnings of a bygone building. But to the couple, it felt like a sign to stay. They tapped architects Greg Warner and Sharon Okada of San Francisco–based Walker Warner, landscape architect David Tamura, and interior designers Marion Philpotts-Miller and Anne Tanaka of Honolulu studio Philpotts Interiors to bring their dream home to life.

The outdoor shower is a meditative hideaway that channels a tropical rain shower. The shower head and hooks are both from Sonoma Forge. A Bangku fine hammered stool from Place. A Design Atelier by Philpotts fills one corner.

Nestled amidst lush greenery in the serene lanes of Siolim, Villa Mandarina unfolds like a quiet narrative—where every material and texture reflects a delicate blend of the old and new. Bringing its design to life was a collaborative endeavour, where the villa’s architecture and interiors became two halves of the same story. While Goa-based developer Vianaar Homes orchestrated the architectural planning, Pashmin Shah and Satyajeet Patwardhan of Amoeba Design were entrusted with weaving in the soul of the home through its interiors and landscaping. Together, they crafted a space that feels deeply rooted in place, yet entirely contemporary.

Each bathroom is an explosion of hues, offering a playful, almost rebellious counterpoint to the otherwise serene interiors. The vibrant mosaic in the shower areas is particularly striking, infusing a tropical vibe into the private spaces.

Surrounded by wild grasses, built in local black basalt and burnt-rose plaster, designed by AD100 firm Case Design, and named after the family’s matriarch—Villa Uma in Alibag is a study in grand yet slow, sustainable living. “Our influences for Villa Uma range across modern and contemporary architects and designers but we are certainly interested in the local vernacular as well. We have taken cues from village houses with deep overhangs to protect window and door openings, while trying to orient each of the spaces to a unique view or experience. This is sometimes a distant view of the hills or a framed portrait of the internal gardens,” Barclay says, adding that the plan of the house is loosely arranged to capture these moments of tranquillity.

The east guest-suite bathroom opens out to a walled garden. Pigmented cement screed, marble, and painted plaster cover the surfaces of the west guest-suite bathroom, which has an outdoor marble shower.
