What Is Brunette Flooring?

So, what exactly is brunette flooring, and what makes this trend different from regular wooden floors?

“Brunette flooring refers to wood floors in dark tones that range from warm medium browns to nearly-black shades, bringing richness and elegance to interiors,” says interior architect Inara Tirkkonen. “While lighter floors make spaces feel brighter and larger, darker floors create a cozy, intimate vibe.”

“It’s not white oak or something with a gray wash,” designer Peter Spalding says. “It’s inviting, classic, and pretty often something that just fades softly into the background.”

According to our experts, the look can be achieved through a range of wood types, with walnut, and chestnut, or espresso-stained oak amongst the most popular choices.

Overall, hardwood floors are timeless and classic—and the warm and dark varieties currently having their renaissance go hand-in-hand with the depth, richness, and coziness we’re embracing through some of this year’s home decor trends. Plus, brunette floors pair perfectly with the moody shades of purple, red, and mocha seen in 2025’s colors of the year.

But according to interior designer Soni Mehra, the true appeal lies in brunette flooring’s newstalgic feel, and the sense of connection it can bring to a home.

“More and more, people are realizing they want their homes to feel like a reflection of who they are,” she says. “Maybe darker wooden floors were in your grandma’s home that you visited every holiday season, or in the villa you stayed in during your honeymoon in Italy. We’re entering an era where we want our stories to be told through our homes, and the clean minimalist aesthetic can only say so much.”

Aside from bringing serious style factor, the experts say there are plenty of practical benefits to going darker and warmer with your wooden floors. As large cloud-like sofas, structural statement coffee tables, and rich hues of paint become mainstays in our homes, a cozy brunette finish becomes a much-needed source of grounding.

“Warm woods are a great base in a room,” Spalding says. “Brown often brings a very loud palette to rest. If your room is getting too wild, drop a brown rug on the floor and see what happens. The outcome is sort of magical, and the same is true of a brunette floor.”

“Dark floors have several advantages,” Tirkkonen adds. “They can make your home feel more high-end, even boosting its value. They also bring a sense of depth to a room, creating a striking contrast against lighter furniture and decor.”

Although there are plenty of advantages to brunette floors, our designers advise evaluating your lifestyle, the size of your room, and the light available in your space to see if any of this style’s drawbacks could come into play.

“Lighter flooring tends to reflect more light and brighten a room, especially one which doesn’t get a lot of natural light,” Mehra says. “On the other hand, while brunette floors can make a space feel more cozy, they can also sometimes make a space look smaller than it is.”

“Darker floors also generally require more upkeep than lighter ones,” Tirkkonen adds. “Scratches, dust, and pet hair stand out more on darker surfaces, so they need regular cleaning to stay looking good. If you have a busy household or pets, maintenance might be something to keep in mind.”
