Dark tones in bathroom design

Whether as an accent, wall color or in the area of furniture – the color black is currently an indispensable part of modern living concepts.

Black is also gaining a firm place in bathroom furnishings. According to architect Andrin Schweizer, the colour is associated with seriousness, elegance and sophistication.

“But it also stands for the mysterious, the mystical, and in art it was often a symbol of the avant-garde,” adds the architect, whose Zurich office has made a name for itself with distinctive interior designs.

Powerful Statement

According to Schweizer, black is always used when you want to make a powerful, bold statement. When renovating, the color is a helpful tool for consciously distinguishing the “new” from the “old.”

Black definitely represents courage when it comes to interior design. Andrin Schweizer is of the opinion that basically all elements in the bathroom can be designed in this color.

“However, I recommend using the colour black consciously and sparingly. So choose a few elements and create a clear contrast with the others,” he says.

Black fittings , for example, exude a considerable amount of self-confidence. They make it clear that this is the home of a design-savvy person who consciously chooses unconventional styles.

Bathroom designers can draw on the full

Schweizer talks about the challenges he faced a few years ago when designing a bathroom with black fittings and accessories – simply because many components were not available in this color.

This has changed fundamentally since leading manufacturers such as Geberit have consistently implemented the trend in their product portfolio and offered many product lines in different surfaces.

“Today, we as designers have a wealth of options to choose from,” says Schweizer happily. There are many more ideas and suggestions for contemporary bathroom furnishings at geberit.de/inspirationen.

Black loves materials with character

Black can be used in many different ways: “Everything goes with it, that’s the great thing about this color,” emphasizes Andrin Schweizer. In the bathroom, he advises not to combine overly dark surfaces with black fittings.

A certain contrast is important so that these elements can be seen to their best advantage. He prefers to combine black, matte surfaces with a reduced appearance with materials with a lot of character.

As examples, he cites hand-glazed tiles, each of which is slightly different, or natural stones with a strong grain – and definitely wood, which for him actually belongs in every bathroom.
