It’s no secret by now that my design style consists of two color palettes: neutrals and moody hues. So it probably comes as no surprise that anything pink is an immediate no, whether it’s in my home or my wardrobe.
But when I saw Heidi Caillier’s latest bathroom project, a pink room with her usual vintage flair, I wondered if I’d been too hasty in my rejection of this seemingly feminine hue. The bathroom might be pink, but it doesn’t feel as girly or preppy as the color often suggests.
There are certain colors we most heavily associate with bathrooms – white for a neutral space and blue for a bolder design. But pink is perhaps the last hue most of us would choose, assuming it to be too sweet and feminine for an elevated space.
But all it takes is one design to prove that this often overlooked color actually has a place in our bathroom designs, and Heidi has made a strong case with this project that pink can be chic and sophisticated in the right space.
And she hasn’t held back. Pink has been color-drenched across the paneled walls, the ceiling, and even the freestanding storage unit, creating an inviting atmosphere and the illusion of great space.
Why does it work? The almost earthy hue contrasts with the varying gray shades in the bathroom floor tiles, creating a more natural feel. The wall paneling adds depth to the design, taking the walls from flat to something more layered.
The vintage feel of the furniture and decor also helps to balance the colors here, creating a more timeless, elegant look. The traditional wash stand-style vanity adds to the elegance of the space and creates a less built-in feel.
The freestanding bathtub adds another layer of luxury, and paired with the vintage bath stool and natural rug, it feels elevated yet not overstated. It brings a more rustic texture to balance the more pristine pink wall color.
It’s those natural materials and textures running through the design that tie everything together. From the bathroom rug to the storage baskets in the cabinet and even the blinds over the window, these natural woven finishes bring warmth and texture to the space.
And then there’s the warm, metallic details scattered throughout. The base of the washstand and the vanity lights pair beautifully with the warm pink paint color, while the darker, aged finish of the cabinet hardware adds to the vintage appeal.
In her Instagram caption, Heidi describes the design as ‘made to look like it’s been there forever,’ and it sums the space up perfectly. It proves that this pretty palette has a place in our homes outside of a children’s bedroom.
And after seeing this design, it’s surprisingly become an alluring option for my bathroom. It’s unexpected, but I think we can all agree that in the right design, it has all the makings of a chic color palette.
