Houzz Identifies 6 Bathroom Trends You’ll Want To Incorporate

While real estate experts frequently advise homeowners to consider neutral, middle-of-the road options, the latest U.S. Houzz Bathroom Trends Report reveals that many homeowners are electing to prioritize personalization over resale value.

Houzz senior editor Mitchell Parker provides insight and photos to demonstrate these popular bathroom trends.

Trend 1: Eclectic Style Increases In Popularity

According to the Houzz report, transitional style still reigns as the most popular choice (23%), following by contemporary (16%), and modern styles (15%). However, Parker tells me that eclectic style has increased from 3% to 5%, and is now tied with farmhouse style.

Trend 2: White Hues Top Gray

“White is the most popular color for most bathroom features, followed by off-white,” Parker says. White (50%) and off-white (20%) are the top two color choices for bathroom countertops, and he says these colors also dominate shower and nonshower walls. Gray only leads in the color choice for vanities – and only by 1%, Parker notes.

Trend 3: Tile Shower Walls And Floors

Homeowners are more likely to choose tile for shower flooring (87%), and shower walls (83%). “Regarding shape, 82% prefer rectangular tiles for shower walls.” Parker says. For shower floors, the most popular choices are rectangular (28%), hexagonal (23%), and square (22%).

Trend 4: Specialty Toilet Features

Parker also notes that 41% of homeowners renovating their bathrooms want toilet specialty features. These include bidet toilet seats, bidet toilet seats with water pressure, self-cleaning functionality, air dryers, and heated seats.

Trend 5: Wet Rooms

Wet rooms are growing in popularity, and Parker says 13% of remodeled bathrooms include one. “Our study found that 66% want a wet room to help them better use the space, followed by other reasons, like universal design (39%), and aesthetics (33%).” Some homeowners chose a wet room because it’s easier to clean (29%).

Trend 6: Alcove Bathtubs and Showers

Among homeowners upgrading their bathtubs in a wet room, it’s almost neck-and-neck between freestanding flat-bottom bathtubs (36%), and alcove bathtubs (35%). Among shower styles, 45% chose low-curb showers, and 44% chose alcove showers. The popularity of alcoves actually aligns with an increase in both arches and shower rooms, according to the Houzz’s Home Design Trends for 2025.

Other Bathroom Trends In The Report

Functionality

While homeowners want a gorgeous bathroom, Parker says functionality has become increasingly important as they focus on comfort and long-term living. “The motivation of making the bathroom more accommodating has grown notably, rising from 23% in 2023 to 27% in 2024,” he explains.

Parker says there’s also a desire to future-proof homes, both for person use and to meet the needs of loved ones. “Nearly two-thirds of homeowners are addressing special needs with their bathroom renovations – and popular features for this include grab bars, nonslip flooring, curbless showers and additional lighting.”

Smaller Projects

The report also reveals an increase in smaller renovation projects and a decline in major bathroom upgrades. “For minor remodels of smaller bathrooms, spending rose by 20% year-over-year, increasing from $5,000 to $6,000,” Parker says. However, there was a decline in such major upgrades as increasing the shower size (dropping from 51% to 41%), changing the bathroom layout (43% to 38%), and modifying walls (41% to 37%). “That said, modifying the ceiling and modifying the flooring have increased by 2 points each to reach 10% and 9%, respectively,” he says. The decline in major renovations could be related to the increase in home maintenance costs.

Sustainability

Here’s another bathroom trend identified in the report. Parker says that more than 4 in 5 homeowners chose sustainable features during primary bathroom renovations (84%). “While more than half of homeowners opt for sustainable design because of environmental friendliness (56%), the majority of homeowners are driven by long-term cost effectiveness (69%),” he explains.
